M•A•C (Make-up Art Cosmetics) is one of the leading cosmetics brands of Éstee Lauder Companies. It was founded in 1984 in Toronto, Canada and has expanded continuously since then. Today, MAC has sales locations in 79 countries across the globe. On 4 March this year, a new brand store celebrated its opening – a store that is unique throughout the whole of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia. With the M•A•C flagship store on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, Éstee Lauder has created a monument to the cosmetics brand.

Its location on one of the biggest boulevards in the world makes this store an outstanding object. But above all, its distinctive design makes it a unique global selling point. Dula-Werke Dustmann & Co. GmbH, which has fitted out 300 M•A•C stores since 2010, played a significant role in the development, production and fitting out of the flagship store in Paris.
Even a year before the opening launch, the first ideas for Éstee Lauder’s individual design concept were being developed in New York and Paris. The challenge to bring these ideas to life was achieved by management together with designers and developers at Dula.

The floating construction of a curved aluminium shell beset with 1,000 black mirrors conveys the lavish and imposing impression of a cathedral. The execution of this design vision was successfully carried out by Dula developers. It was necessary to develop load-bearing profiles that were able to bear the weight of the mirrors as well as meet all safety and fire protection requirements. In order to satisfy these requirements, special tools for the moulding and uniform curving of the aluminium profiles (5 x 15 cm large and 6 m long in cross-section) were developed and manufactured. A solution was also found for the coating and chrome plating of component parts of this size. The mounting of profiles was carried out by building a basic construction made out of steel which was attached to the concrete ceiling. As a result, the total weight of all profiles including mirrors and steel ring hanging from the ceiling is approximately 10 tonnes.

The shape of the steel construction and thereby the space’s ceiling was prescribed by the curved aluminium profiles and their alignment in the ground plan. The individual elements were only put into place and connected to each other on-site. From the ellipsis-shaped ceiling that was created in this way, a Barrisol sheet lit from behind was hung. In this way, the impression of a daylight ceiling providing optimal light conditions for use and an additional optical highlight were created.

In order to enable the individual components to fit perfectly in the run-up to the store’s opening, during the development phase two prototype samplings took place at Dula’s own production facility in Ahaus. For this purpose, partial sections of the construction were built in original size, presented and approved. These tests in the run-up to the on-site installation enabled a systematic review of all design guidelines and statutory requirements during the entire planning phase. In this way, from December 2012 Dula’s experienced project managers were able to ensure a smooth roll-out for M•A•C.

At the same time, Dula brought a smaller flagship store in Rome, also with two floors, to fruition. The execution of ongoing parallel projects is made possible through the use of standard elements developed specifically for M•A•C which are available at any time thanks to Dula’s own storage capacity. These modular constructions offer high flexibility and economic benefits - M•A•C was able to save 30% in costs and has become a trendsetter in the use of shop fittings in the exclusive cosmetics market. As a result, in the ranking of Éstee Lauder’s own brands M•A•C has moved into third place.
